Chances are if you catch me on a beach or by a pool, I’m usually on dry land (often with some sort of tropical beverage!) It’s not that I don’t love the water, it’s just that … swimming has never been my strong suit. When I was six or seven years old, my mom signed me up for swim classes at the local YMCA. Both of my brothers knew how to swim and she thought it best if I learned too.
Fast forward to two years ago, I joined the YMCA as an adult with my buddy, Jamal. Our original intention was to get the exercise benefit but instead, we managed to spend our time on one end of the pool catching up on current events. We looked so “inexperienced” that real swimmers in the pool would come over and offer us tips.
So, on the heels of Team USA’s swimming victories in the London 2012 Olympics, I decided to take on a few new strokes. I called on a former dance student of mine, and awesome swimmer, Amelia Templeton, to help me out. She enlisted her friend, another amazing swimmer, Julia and we took to the water! They were my instructors for the day teaching me the breaststroke, backstroke, and butterfly.
